Astrid Lindgren's text is a paraphrase of a once popular Swedish poem by Karl-Erik Forsslund from 1900, which has been published in many collections and anthologies, as well as a picture book with illustrations by Harald Wiberg. A German publisher commissioned Lindgren to produce a shorter, prose version of the poem, which he published with Wiberg's illustrations in 1965. Lindgren's text was not published in Sweden until half a century later, with illustrations by Eva Eriksson.
